Social media sites are abuzz with people preparing to shift their online lives away from Facebook’s encrypted messaging platform WhatsApp, after the tech firm changed some of its terms and conditions.

The sudden change in rules created a snowball effect of misinformation, which WhatsApp executives are now trying to rein in amid a mass exodus of users. Rival apps Signal and Telegram have conversely seen a boom in new arrivals, while WhatsApp downloads have declined.
