The UK financial watchdog has begun preliminary investigations into an alleged rape of a female former graduate trainee at UBS, who has accused the Swiss bank of seriously mishandling her claims of sexual assault.

According to people familiar with the matter, the Financial Conduct Authority has made contact with the alleged victim to discuss her claim that she was raped by a director of the bank at his home in south London. The assault is said to have taken place in September last year.
