UBS investment bank proves resilient in challenging Q3

Analysts say new strategy announced a year ago is working, although regulatory demand marks a blip for the Swiss group's capital-strengthening efforts

UBS’ investment bank passed its first real test since its revamp at the start of this year, as underlying operating profits before tax quadrupled from the same period last year during a challenging third quarter.

At group level, however, progress in cutting assets and boosting its capital ratio was undermined, at least temporarily, as Swiss regulators set more stringent demands on assets to cover litigation, compliance and other risks.
