UK taxpayers now pay more people than the population of Virginia

£17.5bn has been claimed under the job retention scheme

The UK government is now paying the wages of around 8.7 million workers – exceeding the 8.6 million people living  in the US state of Virginia.

The number of people relying on the government's furloughing scheme now also surpasses headcount at some of the largest US companies. Walmart, for example, employs 2.2 million people globally.
