Newly qualified lawyers’ pay has long been a battleground for top US and UK law firms. But the war for junior talent is set to escalate this year as mega-mergers and partner poachings have increased competition in the sector.

“The push for increasing the headline salary of newly qualified lawyers will continue. I don’t think it will stop any time soon,” said Edward Poulton, London managing partner of legal giant Baker McKenzie.
