When the going gets tough, bonuses get employees going

How do companies keep up employee morale when profits are plunging? One of the quickest ways is to hand out a special bonus.

That is what happened last week when German carmaker Daimler said around 130,000 workers would receive a one-off “appreciation” bonus of €500. The payout comes on top of Daimler’s existing profit-sharing programme, which has been in place for more than two decades.
