SEC takes control of hedge funds

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is to take control of the $850bn (€666bn) hedge fund industry for the first time, despite divisions among SEC commissioners and widespread opposition from the funds themselves.

The new powers give the regulator the ability to examine accounts and conduct spot checks.
