The chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland has announced his resignation, five-and-a-half years after taking on what the group’s chair described as “one of the toughest jobs in banking”.

Ross McEwan will remain at RBS until a replacement is found and has a 12-month notice period, the bank said in a statement. Chair Howard Davies said the board will start an internal and external search for McEwan’s successor.
