Robeco has scooped three prizes in Financial News's Excellence in Institutional Fund Management awards, making the Dutch asset manager this year's standout firm.

The €181bn business won three awards — more than any other fund group — fending off competition in the cross-border, ESG and smart-beta manager categories.

Schroders also picked up multiple awards this year. The UK-listed group took the equity manager prize, while Schroders Solutions secured first place in the investment consultant/fiduciary manager category.

FN invited submissions for the awards in May and published a shortlist in September.

A judging panel made up of industry experts and FN journalists scored entries on a range of criteria including long-term performance and innovation.

Other fund groups that won accolades include Legal & General Investment Management, which was named UK manager of the year. Meanwhile BlackRock's iShares business was recognised as the standout ETF provider.

Polar Capital, Man Group and Insight Investment also picked up awards.

The annual awards also recognise individuals working across the European sector, with BNY Mellon Investment Management chief executive Hanneke Smits named Industry Personality of the Year.

Smits, who took on the top job at BNY Mellon IM in 2020 after four years overseeing its Newton Investment Management unit, was in February this year appointed global chair of the 30% Club.
