Pension funds in Europe and the US plunged deeper into crisis in the third quarter thanks to the poor performance of stock and bond markets, according to a new report.

Falls in equities hit asset values hard, according to a study of defined benefit pension plans in Europe, the North America and Asia by Towers Perrin. At the same time the continued decline in bond yields translated to a rise in the value of liabilities.
