Shortly after President Donald Trump unveiled his Liberation Day tariffs one month ago, Advent International’s 13 managing partners met to discuss their next steps.

Months earlier, the private equity giant’s portfolio companies had set up ‘tariff war rooms’ to prepare for the expected new levies. But the trade rules announced for more than 180 countries in April — and the subsequent stock market sell-off — proved more brutal than almost anyone had anticipated.
