NYSE glitch triggers wild price swings, temporary trading freeze

Trading was suspended in more than 80 stocks — including Wells Fargo, Uber and Palantir — with a collective market value of more than $6tn early in 24 January’s session

A technical glitch at the New York Stock Exchange on 24 January briefly caused wild price swings and a temporary trading freeze in stocks of major companies such as Exxon Mobil, McDonald’s and Walmart.

Hundreds of stocks experienced erroneous prices as a result of the incident, the biggest snafu to hit a US stock exchange in several years, according to a spreadsheet of affected securities released by the NYSE.
