Nasdaq OMX Q4 profit slumps 40% on higher expenses

Rising costs and lower trading volumes weigh on exchange group's results

Nasdaq OMX Group's fourth-quarter profit slumped 40% as higher expenses as well as quieter trading during the quarter pressured the exchange operator's results.

Exchanges in the fourth quarter found it difficult to match the third quarter's soaring trading volume as a normal holiday slowdown was only worsened this year by nagging concerns over Europe's debt crisis.
