Allianz chief economic adviser Mohamed El-Erian has spoken out against the “single-minded pursuit of wealth” in the finance sector — and derided internet rumours that he has a net worth of more than $1bn.

“I am certainly not a billionaire, I am in fact nowhere near being a billionaire, that is just completely and utterly wrong,” he said, in response to a question about his net worth on a BBC radio programme about wealth.
