Michael Miles, a Morgan Stanley board member for more than a decade and a staunch ally of Philip Purcell, has become the first independent director to quit since Purcell was ousted and replaced as chairman and chief executive by John Mack.

Miles, a former chief executive of Philip Morris, the tobacco company, and chairman of the Morgan Stanley board nominating committee, resigned with immediate effect last night.
