Merrill Lynch to end pay freeze

Merrill Lynch has lifted its freeze on salary rises after two years of frugality, in the latest sign of growing confidence on Wall Street.

Stan O'Neal, chairman and chief executive, has given the go-ahead for staff earning base salaries of under $100,000 to receive 'merit-based' salary increases at the end of the year.
