MatlinPatterson buys bankrupt Brazil airline

MatlinPatterson, a US-based private equity and distressed debt investor, has taken control of Brazil's embattled national airline Varig.

The MatlinPatterson-led investor consortium will pay $24m (€19m) to the Brazil government and promise to invest a further $485m, through its cargo portfolio company Varig Logistica.
