GAM takes activist stance over crypto investments at Japan’s SBI Holdings

Co-CIOs of GAM’s alternatives business say the Tokyo-based firm is ‘implicitly destroying shareholder value’ with its current approach to crypto investments

GAM, the Switzerland-based asset manager, has made a leap into shareholder activism and called on Japanese financial services group SBI Holdings to take a more “proactive stance” towards its cryptocurrency investments.

Tokyo-headquartered SBI Holdings, which is held by GAM’s Global Special Situations fund, has become one of Japan’s largest investors in crypto and blockchain technology.
