Freddie Mac understated earnings by over $5bn

Freddie Mac, the troubled US government-sponsored mortgage refinancing agency, and one of the largest derivatives users globally, has restated its earnings for three years, revealing previous understatements of over $5bn (€4.2bn).

The sum exceeds the amount previously estimated by the agency. In June Freddie had issued a statement saying that the total increase of earnings would amount to a maximum of $4.5bn.
