Australian bank ANZ has hired former HSBC banker Nuno Matos as its next chief executive after he missed out on the top job at the UK lender.

Matos is set to take the reins of ANZ in July next year, succeeding Shayne Elliott who is stepping down after nine years in the top job, according to a statement.
