China’s economy ends year with a whimper, and more hope for stimulus

December data from China Beige Book indicate the government’s autumn effort to boost the economy is already losing its power

China’s economy is winding up the year with its tail between its legs. December data from China Beige Book indicate the government’s autumn effort to boost the economy is already losing its power.

The long-awaited recovery in consumer spending it was intended to generate has yet to materialise in a sustainable way. Sales volume in every sector within retailing declined relative to both the prior month and 12 months earlier, figures from the independent research firm indicate.
