Abandoning the profit motive is the last thing one imagines banks doing. But Charity Bank gives money away, reinvesting its earnings into the charitable causes of its borrowers.

Now Barclays has become the first bank to get in on this non-money-making act. It has invested £500,000 in Charity Bank – for zero dividend because Charity Bank returns money only to charity shareholders.
