Barclays chair Nigel Higgins asked Andrew Bailey to “expedite” regulatory investigations into his chief executive Jes Staley, a court has heard, amid concerns over how the bank would be impacted by the probe going public.

The Financial Conduct Authority fined and banned Staley in 2023 over allegations he misled the watchdog in a letter four years previously that described his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as “not close”.
